Press Democrat Article

A HUGE THANKS, and a plate of gluten-free cheesecake brownies, to our Sonoma County newspaper, the Press Democrat, for running an article about celiac disease and gluten intolerance on January 22, 2012, and highlighting the work of North Bay Celiacs. We hope you read the article and offer comments or write a letter to the editor if you like. It was a pleasure to work with writer Susan Swartz and photographer Christopher Chung.

We are lucky to have many local food purveyors, chefs and cooking instructors offer gluten-free products, menus and classes, and it was good to see some of them mentioned in the article. Thanks to Jennifer Torrey (cooking instructor), the French Laundry and C4C Gluten-Free Flour, Guy Fieri and his new gluten-free barbeque sauces, and Kendall Jackson with their new gluten-free Grapeseed Flour, for serving our community. Special thanks to Jennifer Torrey for referring the Press Democrat to North Bay Celiacs for the article. We are pleased to list many other local manufacturers and restaurants.

I also appreciate Dr. Al Haas, chief of the allergy department at Kaiser Santa Rosa, for stepping forward to clarify the difference between celiac disease, gluten intolerance and a wheat allergy.

One important point that I would like to emphasize is that celiac experts recommend patients be tested for celiac disease before trying out the gluten-free diet. Ten reasons to get tested for celiac disease BEFORE going on a gluten-free diet or putting your child on one. For more information, check out our favorite Expert Advice on diagnosis and testing.

Sincerely,
